5 out of 5 stars The way the drum set should be built.   July 21, 2010
Goki (New Jersey)
These work perfectly. Yes, it's true that the rebound is better. It's also really quiet. Love it. You don't even realize it's an add-on to the drum set.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent Product. Didn't remove the plastic ring on drums   July 14, 2010
Rafael Rolando Richards Rodriguez (Maracaibo, Zulia Venezuela)
I have the Beatles Rockband Limited Edition Premium Bundle.
I bought these silencers and when installing it, i put them on the top of my drums WITHOUT removing the plastic ring (i was afraid of damage my new drums).
The size of the silencers is perfect for cover all the drum including the plastic ring.
Just make good pressure on the silencers to make a good contact with the drums. Then calibrates the drums on the game. I got excelent score in the drum practice mode. The sound is reduced about 50%. These silencers works perfectly. Like i said, didn't remove the plastic ring nor slice the silencers to install them.

5 out of 5 stars What a difference!!!   June 17, 2010
S. Francesconi (Tavares, FL, USA)
I'm a bit of a heavy hitter on my RB2 drums, and was getting worried that I might damage them over time. So I read the reviews and weighed my options between the Blockhead Rock Band Hit Kit and the Official Rock Band Drum Silencers. I went with the blockhead because of the sheer number of accessories. It was a mistake. The pedal broke within 3 weeks, the sticks just feel like pieces of heavy plastic (which I guess it what they are), and the drum-head silencers were just thin pieces of foam rubber with an oversized black rubber band holding them in place. The red started to deform within days, after a set I'd have to tuck the foam back under the band to keep it from flying off. Plus, the sickening smack if I missed the silencer and "clipped" the plastic holder. Blech.

I almost didn't buy the official silencers, thinking they would be more of the same. I also didn't want to start disassembling my precious RB2 drum set. After only a couple days, I'm glad I bought the offical ones.

First off, you do NOT need to take apart your drums. That's just asking for trouble!!!!

Upon opening the package I was surprised at the difference between the two products. Where the blockhead was lightweight foam rubber, these silencers felt heavier and thicker. It's hard to describe, they are just more "solid". When you apply the silencers, they WILL cover your entire drum head, including the gray ring. This is by design! Don't start altering them by slicing away at them to make them fit inside the ring. Trust me, the first time you miss hitting the center of the pad and would clip the ring, you'll thank me. The entire drum head is protected, and these are going to be MUCH cheaper to replace (if I even need to!) than the entire drum set.

The pads are held onto the ring and drumhead by adhesive. Just peel off the coated paper, press firmly, and they are on. Easy.

Another thing, people have commented that you'll need to strike harder to register your hits, and that your accuracy will go down. I found the opposite to be the case. I'm able to use a lighter stroke, and it still registers fine.

As for the purpose they are designed for, I was amazed at how much more quiet it is when I play. No more flat "schwack!" slap as I hit the drums.

I can't recommend this enough. I should have bought these in the first place, instead of wasting my money and time on the blockheads product.

5 out of 5 stars my girlfriend loves it   May 28, 2010
C. Crockett (Columbus, Oh)
After one week of using the silencers I am satisfied with their performance. I read a lot of the reviews about how the pads mess with the accuracy. I also read about the penny modification. After receiving them and taking my drum set apart I decided to do something that I did not happen across while investigating this product. I have the original rock band drum set. Each drum pad has a padding on it, with a colored circle. I removed that original padding, leaving behind a fabric type "residue". I then attached each silencer directly to the residue. Leaving me with four circular pads that used to cover the striking surface. I haven't noticed any terrible lapse in accuracy, and the silencers did their job. I know some people are not going to want to remove the original pads for one reason or another. They are just being covered anyway and the extra layer probably contributes to the lack of response during game play. All-in_all, I like'em.
Pros: The definitely minimize the sounds of striking the pads
Cons: No instructions but there's vid's on youtube to install so not too bad I guess.

3 out of 5 stars Yes, dampens the sounds...but kills accuracy!   May 8, 2010
A. Raol (Fairfax, VA)
Bottom line...Yes, the pads dampen the sound of the original surface considerably! So the product does what it advertises. BUT...the pads killed my accuracy in the game.

INSTALLATION:
There's a lot of reviews recommending one of two ways to install these things. For some reason the pads are too big to stick directly on top of the drum heads inside the plastic rim. So you can either trim the pads with scissors or remove the plastic rims. I choose to remove the plastic rim, which turned out to be easier than I thought. It also looks a lot nicer.

Here's how I did it. Start with the RED and GREEN heads first. Because they hang off the side, all you have to do is reach underneath and feel for the rubber stoppers. There are 4 of them under each head. Grab hold of the plastic rim with one hand and with the other just push up the rubber stopper from underneath the drum head. The top will pop up easily. DON'T YANK it up too far because there is a 5-6 inch wire connecting the head to the base which you don't want to damage. Once the head is off, look around the bottom of the plastic rim and unscrew each of the little black screws and take off the plastic ring. When the ring is off, just place the head back on the base and slide the plastic stoppers back into their holes. Do the same for the YELLOW and BLUE heads but because you can't reach underneath to help the rubber stopper up, you'll just have to pull the rim up gently.

Once the plastic rings are off and the heads are back on the base, wipe down the tops of the head with a damp cloth to take off all the dust. Then stick each of the dampening pads on top. You'll agree with everyone previously that they really do look great compared to the grey plastic from before.

PERFORMANCE:
Ok...first the dampening. YES, they definitely do dampen the sound considerably and it sounds a whole lot better than that annoying TAT TAT TAT from before. I'd say they are about 30%-40% quieter. The sticks also bounce off nicely and feel more natural.

The downside however is that the accuracy of my play did go down noticeably. A lot of hits were just not registering and I found myself having to hit harder to get them to take. I found I'd have to hit as close to the middle as possible because the edges just barely registered.

CONCLUSION:
If you're getting these pads for your kids so you can sleep more soundly when they play...then yes...these are perfect. If you're a pro and pride yourself on accuracy, then you may want to stay clear. An economical alternative might be to invest in the Logitech drum set which is now available for around $100.
