Is Zelda getting a major overhaul?

zeldaIn a recent interview with the UK’s Official Nintendo Magazine Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma talked about the new Legend of Zelda game coming to the Wii next year and this is what he had to say,

“So we have been trying something new in terms of the structure of the Wii version of the new Zelda game this time,” he continued. “I am really hopeful that people will be surprised with the changes we have implemented for this Wii version.”

“I hope that we can show you something at the E3 show next year, and it is something we are hopeful will be surprising,” Aonuma said.

Has Nintendo finally seen the light? Man, I hope so!

The gaming industry has come a long way since the days of the original Legend of Zelda games and I have recently pondered the question, “Has Link lost his appeal after all these years?”

The answer is complicated, but I believe the general consensus is yes! The reason is two-fold: The first reason is because of the rapid growth of the gaming industry; gamers hold developers to a much higher standard than in the past. We expect newer, fresher ideas with more content, better graphics and more in-depth storylines than more than ever before.

And the second reason has to do with Nintendo’s mentality of sticking to its ‘tried and true’ gaming elements. The Legend of Zelda is one of the most recognized gaming franchises of all time and it has such a vast following yet Nintendo has not stepped up to the times. They have not embraced the fact that change is necessary in order keep the franchise fresh and to attract new gamers. This is why Zelda has lost some of its appeal!

Look we all love Link and his awesome adventures, but its time to see a new Link and a new Legend of Zelda format. I really hope that Nintendo is taking these changes seriously and that we get a brand new Zelda adventure that will be worth being a part of! And I’m not just talking about it supporting Wii-motion plus! I’m talking a major overhaul here Nintendo! After all of these years of loyalty as Zelda fans, I think that you owe us this. I’m looking forward to E3 2010 to see what they have in store for the future of the Legend of Zelda series. Lets hope its worth the wait!
