Nintendo considering use of 3G network?
So it seems that Nintendo is once again thinking ahead in terms of their portable gaming options in the form of the 3G network. Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed the companies interest in the technology as a possible future format for their handheld market. It is no secret that digital downloads are quickly becoming the norm these days with the iphone and now the fully DLC-integrated PSP-Go from Sony gaining more and more popularity.
Making the transition from game cartridges to digital downloads is definitely something that Nintendo will have to consider if they are to continue success in the portable gaming market. While I totally agree that considering the use of the 3G network is a good idea it begs the question of why is Nintendo not taking a stand and making this a reality? I understand that Nintendo has dominated the handheld market in recent years with the DS, but time has now caught up with it and its becoming outdated.
To make matters worse, Nintendo announced recently that yet another DS-revamp is coming soon in the form of the new DSi XL. This model of the DS will support all of the DSi functionability, but with a bigger frame and bigger screen. Why did Nintendo waste time with this rehashed crap when Sony is making strides with its no hassle game downloads. I think its time that Nintendo starts to recognize that everything about the company is outdated and its time for a change.
Using the 3G network would be a good choice for Nintendo because not only is it available almost everywhere, but its also a fast and reliable means for internet download usage. Nintendo is very much interested in the way in which the e-book reader Kindle uses 3G to download e-books and newspapers seamlessly and if they decided to mimick this technology then I would be all for it. Unfortunately, I do not see anyway that the DSi will compete with Sony’s PSP-Go once the reality of DLC content continues to set in. The only way for Nintendo to stay in the loop is to consider this route as not a possible option, but a must-do option!
Just look at the success of the iphone and now the new android os software making strides using the 3G network….the time for action is now Nintendo. Otherwise, you will be on the outside looking in! Whether you decide to use the 3G network or 4G or whatever….just do something worthy of competing with Sony and Microsoft and Apple and prove to us that you belong to be named in the same sentence as those companies!
