The Future of EA’s Madden NFL football series

In the wake of John Madden’s retirement from the broadcast booth last week comes the question: Will Electronic Arts keep the Madden football series going or will they remove the ‘Madden’ moniker now that he has retired? Its certainly an interesting dilemma and one that I think will give EA a lot to think about down the road. Personally, I think that it will be hard to do away with Madden NFL football because of the fact that it has been a staple in the gaming business every year since 1988!

I believe that the game will have no trouble selling at all, even with Madden gone from Sunday nights, but I’m sure that others will disagree. The Madden series has brought in so much revenue over the years, while also creating a huge recurring fan base that I just don’t see it happening at all! If EA did decide that a change is to be made to the series, the only viable title name that would make since to me would be to call the series NFL Football! However, who knows what will happen…its anyones guess at the moment!

In the meantime, fans are already gearing up for Madden 10 coming this August and a lot of speculation is going on about who will be on this years cover. Last year, Brett Favre succumbed to the ‘Madden curse’ so who is next? There is actually talk of doing more than one athlete on this years cover, so we could see as many as 5 stars gracing the Madden game this Fall! Its going to be a wild summer in the land of Electronic Arts as decisions will be made and us fans can only wait and see what the future will hold for our beloved Madden NFL football series!
